Are Your Pets Prepared for a Disaster? | SERVPRO® of Piscataway

If you share your home and life with a furry or feathered friend, you’re not alone. An estimated 85 million American families own at least one pet.

These lovable family additions to the family bring much joy and happiness to their “pet parents” and their “siblings.” If you’re like most pet owners, you proudly consider your pets part of your family.

That’s why it’s important to plan for your pet’s needs during emergencies and disasters like severe storms. It’s a good idea to prepare for your pets the same way you do for other members of your family.

Pet Emergency Preparedness

Here’s some advice to help you and your family ensure everyone—even the furry members of your family—are ready if the unexpected happens.

Consider a rescue alert sticker. You can add these stickers to your window to let rescue workers others know there are pets inside your home. If you and your pets have left, you can mark the sticker as “evacuated.”

Know the places you can go with your pet. Don’t leave your pets behind. Instead, call ahead (before you need it) to find places you know they’ll be welcome, too.

Pack supplies for them. You’ll want to have extra food, collars, leashes and other important supplies for your pet. It’s also a good idea to have pictures of you and your pet together in your emergency kit so that you can prove they’re part of your family.

Be sure your important information is on your pet’s tags. Put your name and phone number on your pet’s tags. This will help reunite them with your family if you’re ever separated during an emergency.
