Doing a Water Damage Inspection on Your Home After Rain | SERVPRO® of Piscataway
Household water damage can truly happen any time. Between appliance leaks, burst pipes and other bizarre issues, there is no schedule that water damage will follow.
However, after it rains is an especially important time to inspect your home for water damage. Rain can work its way into the tiniest of external openings, causing extreme structural damage to your home over time.
By doing regular inspections after every rain shower, you can be certain that you are not letting any water damage go undetected—meaning what you do find will be much less difficult and costly to treat. Here are some places to check your home for water damage after it rains:
Places to Check for Water Damage After It Rains
Inspect your roof with binoculars. It is a good idea to keep an eye on your roof, and especially wise to check it after it rains. Go outside with binoculars to look for loose shingles or signs of wear, and if you are lucky, you may even see spots where water damage is working its way into your home in real-time so you know for sure.
In your basement or crawl space. If your foundation gets soaked due to improper drainage when it rains, you may start to notice signs of water damage in the basement or crawl space of your home. After it rains, look on your foundational walls for any signs that water is seeping in through cracks or breaks in the structure. Also be sure to look down at the floor, as water can seep up through the ground in some cases.
Around external doors and windows. Your doors and windows are designed to keep out the elements, but issues with weatherstripping and general wear can develop over time, giving water a great place to work its way into the home. Check around doors and windows for visible moisture, softness or discoloration after the next rain—this can be evident either inside or outside, so it is best to check both.
