Preventing Mold Growth After Suffering Water Damage | SERVPRO® of Piscataway

Water damage is a devastating problem. Not only can it damage a home and all of its contents, but it can also present unique health hazards and risks during the cleanup process.

One of those dangerous risks is mold growth. The CDC lists many negative symptoms associated with mold exposure, made extra dangerous because it can begin growing as soon as 24 hours after moisture is introduced.

If you’re concerned about mold growth after experiencing water damage, here are the steps you can take to help stop mold before it starts.

Before You Get Started

  • Never re-enter before officials have deemed it safe and are sure all water has receded.
  • For insurance claims, take photos and videos of damage throughout, including damage done to furniture and walls.

Begin Drying Immediately

  • Open windows and doors as long as weather allows.
  • Before the professional cleanup crew arrives, you can begin vacuuming with a heavy-duty, outdoor vacuum.
  • Set up fans, dehumidifiers and heaters to speed up drying time.

Sort Items Exposed to Water

  • Non-porous materials such as metal, plastic and glass can often be cleaned, disinfected and reused.
  • Porous materials such as wood, upholstery and paper of any kind can trap mold and should be discarded.
  • It is important to note that drying carpet will not necessarily remove mold spores once they begin to grow.

Consult a Professional Right Away

Mold is associated with discolorations and foul odors, but more often lurks unnoticed long before it is seen. In some cases, carpets can be salvaged after water damage, but experts typically recommend a replacement of the carpet pad at minimum.

While replacing the carpet pad alone is more cost-effective than re-carpeting the entire home, a professional will have to be consulted to make sure this will suffice in your situation.

If you’re worried about water damage cleanup and subsequent mold growth, SERVPRO® of Piscataway can help you restore your home back to normal.
