A Look at the Dangers That Lightning Can Pose During Thunderstorms | SERVPRO® of Piscataway

When thunderstorms pop up suddenly, there are many ways they can cause damages to an area, but lightning is one of the biggest concerns. Any time you can hear thunder, lightning is possible, as lightning is actually the root cause of the claps of thunder we hear.

Often, lightning will simply strike between clouds, but if it strikes toward the ground, it is important to know the dangers it can cause so you can make better decisions on how to stay safe.

How Does Lightning Cause Damage When It Strikes?

Lightning damage to electrical wiring. If lightning strikes a building, it can cause serious damage to the wiring and the electronics that are plugged into the walls, as well. The high voltage of lightning will overwhelm a home’s wiring, causing a power surge that can ruin electronics and even cause sparks that lead to fires. If you are able to, unplug everything in the home before a storm comes through the area. If not, using surge protectors on every outlet is another layer of protection you can add.

Lightning damage to concrete structures. Though concrete structures are extremely sturdy, they are not impervious to lightning damage. Concrete is poured around metal reinforcers, which are susceptible to absorbing voltage if lightning strikes the building. If this happens, the charge can be distributed through the concrete, causing damage to the building and to anyone touching the walls or floors directly as well.

Lightning damage outdoors. Lightning often strikes tall, isolated trees, which is why standing near a tree during a storm is not advised. Lightning is simply looking for the easiest way to get to the ground, so it will typically strike the object that makes it easiest to get there—and because of how far lightning can travel, it is best to avoid being outside at all if there is a storm in the vicinity.

Lightning damage to buildings. When lightning strikes a building, it is hitting the construction materials with tons of force and lots of heat, and can even start fires when it strikes. A building that has been struck by lightning can suffer from a cracked foundation, holes in the roof and fire damage.
